New Energy Standards Banish Linear Supplies Focus: The California Energy Commission’s energy efficiency standards for external power supplies, which went into effect in 2006, imposed requirements that could not be readily met by linear power supplies. Switched-mode power supplies can meet the standards, but careful attention must be paid to the different sources of losses in the supplies. Some useful tips are provided to help designers meet the CEC standard and also achieve low cost designs.
What you’ll learn: - How to meet CEC energy efficiency requirements for external power supplies
- How to gauge the performance of a LinkSwitch-based switched-mode power supply with a linear power supply
- How to weigh the various sources of loss in an external switched-mode power supply
Notes: Article includes a diagram showing the different functions/components in a 10-W external power supply and the losses contributed by each function/component as a percentage of the input power.
