Extending the Input Voltage Range of PowerPath Circuits for Automotive and Industrial Applications

Focus:

PowerPath controller ICs from Linear Technology provide switching between multiple input power sources, such as an ac adaptor, USB port and Li-ion battery. These devices also perform diode OR'ing. For some applications, the voltage ratings on these controllers are insufficient. However, those ratings can easily be extended by adding a diode and (in some cases) a few resistors. Circuit modifications described here enable the controller to withstand a large negative input voltage such as a reversed adapter input or a large positive input supply such as an automotive load-dump transient.
