Ideas on DC-DC Converters for Delivery of Low Voltage and High Currents for the SLHC/ILC Detector Electronics in Magnetic field and Radiation environments

Focus:

To power the signal processing circuitry associated with detectors inside the Super Large Hadron Collider (SLHC) and International Linear Collider (ILC), high-efficiency dc-dc converters are needed to convert 48 V to 2 V. Since the converters are to be placed at the point of load, they must withtstand high levels of radiation and high magnetic fields. This paper evaluates dc-dc converter technologies and components that may be used in these applications. It provides an overview of dc-dc converter technologies, discusses power converter design issues, and then evaluates specific semiconductor components such as dc-dc converter modules and dc-dc converter ICs. The later are tested with air core inductors, which must be used in place of standard ferrite inductors because of the converter's need to operate in high magnetic fields.
