ELECTRICAL SAFETY IN PC BASED MEDICAL PRODUCTS, INCLUDING CHANGES IN IEC 601-1 3RD ADDITION. Options and Solutions

Focus:

Generic computer power supplies such as AT or ATX types are generally unsafe for use in a medical environment because of high leakage current and improper insulation as defined by IEC601-1 and UL2601-1. To comply with leakage current requirements requires either the addition of an isolation transformer or the use of a medical-grade power supply (the author makes the case for the latter.) Leakage current requirements for UL2601-1 and IEC601-1 are discussed including the differences in the two standards as well as the changes in leakage current requirements from the second edition of IEC601-1 to the third edition of this standard. Hi-POT and EMC requirements are also discussed.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to understand leakage current and hi-POT requirements of IEC601-1 and UL2601-1
