Answering your Questions about Power Design

Energy Recovery Snubbers with Rudy Severns

Focus:

At power levels above a kilowatt, dissipative snubbers consume high amounts of power which degrades power converter efficiency and creates thermal management issues. So at high power levels it is preferrable to use snubbers that recover energy by delivering it to the load or back to the power source. Designing energy recovery snubbers requires a balancing of design for highest efficiency versus design for low noise and ringing. The latter requires damping. Energy recovery snubbers range from the simple to the complex --summary of chapter in ebook, 'Snubber Circuits for Power Electronics.'
