Choosing the right topology Focus: This article discusses how the choice of a power supply topology affects four main parameters of power supply performance--cost, size, EMC performance, and efficiency. These factors are discussed with respect to seven topologies, which are mostly resonant or quasi resonant. These topologies include the company's 'NV' topology with self-driven synchronous rectifier, half-bridge LLC resonant converter, full-bridge current doubler, half-bridge current doubler (hard switching), ZVZC switching dc-dc transformer plus pre-regulator, ZCS resonant converter, and the quasi-resonant converter. Using the company's EFE series 300-W ac-dc supply as an example, the article presents a topology selection process in which each topology receives a score relating to the following design factors: switching and efficiency characteristics, size, complexity, EMC, adjustment range, multiple outputs, and semi-regulated outputs. To determine the optimum topology, the scores are weighted to reflect the importance of the factors. Design tradeoffs are discussed.
