Reduce the Cost and Complexity of Medium LCD LED Backlights with a Single Inductor LED Driver for 60 LEDs Focus: Designs based on the LT3598 LED driver IC reduce the cost and complexity of LED backlights for medium-sized LCD displays. A boost converter that maintains a regulated LED current even when VIN is is greater than VOUT, the LT3598 drives as many as 6 strings of 10 LEDs at up to 30 mA per string, yet requires just a single driver IC, a single inductor, and some external passives. Design examples presented here include LED drivers for 60 LEDs driven at 20 mA, 20 LEDs driven at 90 mA, and 40 LEDs driven at 20 mA (with two channels disabled).
