Aero Trends, Future electrical power challenges and solutions within the aerospace industry Focus: A major trend in the commercial and military aerospace industries is the development of more electric aircraft (MEA) whereby hydraulic and bleed technologies are replaced with electrical ones for the purposes of reducing weight, easing aircraft construction and maintenance, saving power or energy, and other benefits. This article discusses the impact of the MEA trend on electrical systems in commercial and military aircraft. Technologies and the design issues relating to power generation, distribution, and energy storage are discussed. In particular, MEA power architectures for next-generation aircraft and various energy storage options are described.
