Higher Efficiency in Lighting through Primary Side Regulation

Focus:

When driving high-brightness LEDs in solid-state lighting (SSL) applications, designing an offline LED power supply based on primary-side regulation can reduce parts count and board space requirements versus the conventional approach based on secondary-side regulation. Secondary-side regulation also permits improved efficiency. This article describes the operating principles and benefits of Fairchild's implementation of primary-side regulation and discusses the performance achieved by its FSEZ1016A controller IC. The article begins with a discussion of the benefits of LED lighting.
