Current-Sense Transformer Application Design Guidelines

Focus:

Current-sense transformers or current transformers provide precise measurement of current, are easy to use, and operate reliabily in harsh environments. In switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs), current-sense transformers are needed to implement control, circuit protection, and monitoring. This application note presents guidelines for selecting off-the-shelf current-sense transformers for SMPS designs based on application requirements for size, operating frequency, function, and current range. The app note explains how to specify parameters such as turns ratio, the transformer's secondary inductance and excitation current, and output voltage and burden resistor.
