Global Companies Expand Power Electronics R&D To Develop Grid Technologies and More Focus: Power electronics (PE) plays a critical role in both renewable energy systems and in emerging smart grid technologies such as high-voltage dc (HVDC) transmission systems and flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS). At present, there are numerous openings for PE engineers at companies such as General Electric (GE), Siemens, and ABB, which produce these types of systems. While many of these job postings relate to development of renewable energy and smart grid technologies, these companies also have requirements for engineers to develop equipment for traditional energy-related businesses like oil and gas, as well as other markets such as industrial automation, transportation, and aviation. PE specialists who perform research and development at these types of companies may find themselves developing power conversion technologies for a wide range of applications. This broad scope influences the types of candidates that are sought to work in power electronics R&D, their roles within the companies, and the ways these companies recruit PE engineers.
