| Power Electronic Circuitry In LED Modules: An Overview Focus: This article presents a detailed overview of the power electronic circuitry that constitutes an LED driver as required in LED lighting applications, which are emerging as more-efficient replacements for incandescent and fluorescent lamps. To begin, electrical characteristics of LEDs are discussed. Then, the demands and criteria for designing efficient LED drivers for offline (ac-powered) operation are discussed leading up to a brief explanation of the uses of single-stage versus dual-stage driver designs. The article then does into detail about the pros and cons of two single-stage driver topologies--the flyback and series-parallel resonant converters. In discussing the flyback converter, the need for power factor correction is briefly explained. Then, the article describes dimming methods and use of diodes to bypass failed LEDs in a string.
