New Hardware-in-the-Loop Platform for Rapid Development of High-Reliability EV and HEV Propulsion Drives

Focus:

A hardware-in-the-loop emulator (Typhoon HIL’s ULL HIL400 system) consisting of an application-specific processing architecture, fast I/O subsystem, and a custom tool chain provides 1-microsec simulation time step and latency. This high-speed emulation makes it possible to develop, debug, optimize, and test the software used to control power electronic systems in one integrated environment. Moreover, emulation enables designers to study the interactions between the controller and the rest of the power electronics hardware. Interface boards enable the HIL400 to work with standard DSP evaluation boards and rapid control prototyping platforms. This article demonstrates the use of this HIL development environment in development of a control algorithm for EV and HEV propulsion drives. Specifically, it presents emulation results for an inverter configuration with a single dc link current transducer and a phase current reconstruction algorithm implemented in software.
