A Guide To Selecting Battery Management Controllers When Designing Li-Ion UPS Systems Focus: Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems based on lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are gaining market acceptance in niche markets. However, the system development of these units is quite fragmented. Every UPS manufacturer is incorporating a unique set of features. This lack of standardization makes it difficult for IC vendors to define battery-management controllers that provide an optimum set of capabilities at the right price point. As a result, chip makers must develop a number of different battery management controllers for Li-ion UPSs. This article discusses the different features available from battery-management controllers and how UPS design decisions impact the controller selection process and the complexity of their design. This article defines key battery management terminology, gives examples of centralized and distributed approaches to battery management, and outlines the design decisions necessary to the selection of a battery management controller.
