Understanding Wireless Part 2

Focus:

Continuing the discussion from part 1, this article explores both technical and market issues that will influence adoption of wireless power technology and products. The articles begins by discussing the benefits and challenges of adaptive inductive coupling (a form of magnetic induction) used in near-field and mid-range applications. When spanning distances of less than several inches, wireless power systems using this technology can achieve efficiency on par with wired power systems, thanks to tuning of the power and coils. Some data on efficiency achieved to date is presented. But then the article goes on to discuss other, more general issues such as confusion over coil-to-coil versus full system efficiency, wireless power performance factors and consumer expectations, the importance of a wireless power standard to consumer adoption, and the importance of engaging with equipment manufacturers in developing wireless power technology, plus safety and regulatory issues and other topics relating to wireless power technology and its adoption.
