Battery Impedance Measurement

Focus:

Measurements of battery impedance over frequency can provide useful information on a battery’s characteristics. This application note describes a test setup and procedure to measure battery impedance from 1 Hz to 40 MHz using the Bode 100 vector network analyzer in combination with the Picotest J2111A current injector. Example measurements are performed on a 9-V alkaline battery. The impedance of a 3.7-V lithium ion battery is also measured to demonstrate how even cells with low output resistance can be measured. The setup works with battery voltages up to 40 V. This test method is described as “simple and fast” and it allows in-circuit measurement of battery impedance.
