What Is To Be Optimized In Magnetic Component Design? Focus: It is generally believed that the best strategy for optimizing the design of magnetic components is to design the magnetic and electrical aspects for equal, or near-equal power loss (i.e., core loss = winding loss.) This principle has a sound basis in the maximum power-transfer theorem from passive circuits theory. However, a different and not necessarily contradictory strategy is to maximize the utilization of the core. This article explores the differences in these strategies. It starts by reviewing the principles of power transfer optimization in magnetics design and then the principles of size optimization or maximizing core utilization by pushing core power loss and saturation to their limits. The article then discusses how these two strategies are related and concludes by describing a strategy for optimizing both power transfer and core utilization.
