Raising The Bar For Flyback Primary-Side Regulation: Enabling Accurate CV-CC Solutions From 5 W To 150 W

Primary-side regulation (PSR) in flyback converters has been widely adopted in many low-power (<5-W) ac-dc applications. PSR is advantageous because it eliminates secondary-side feedback components—reducing component count, PCB space, and bill-of-materials cost. But this regulation method has been limited to low-power designs because the existing controllers lack the intelligence needed to accurately control higher-power designs. This article introduces some ICs that overcome this limitation. After describing some less-apparent system-level benefits of PSR, the article describes challenges in implementing PSR at higher power levels. Then, it describes how smart high-voltage IC technology implemented in TI’s green mode controllers can simplify and make PSR viable for ac-dc flyback designs from 5 W to 150 W. Efficiency results for a 7.5-W flyback based on the UCC28910 regulator and regulation results for a 130-W flyback based on the UCC28630 controller demonstrate the benefits and practicality of PSR and the chip features that enable PSR are highlighted.
