Understanding Power Flow In Cuk Converters

Focus:

Ćuk-type converters are now commonplace but not always well understood. Of the various design considerations, little is said in the literature about the flow of power within the converter itself. This article intends to make power flow in the Ćuk converter explicit and discuss some of its consequences. With two reactive elements, the power flows not only from input to output but also between inductive and capacitive elements. In this discussion, the different power flows are identified and from them the amount of power handled in both reactive elements derived. The recirculation of power within the converters is explained.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to understand how power flows within Cuk converters
  • How to determine the required power ratings for inductive and capacitive elements in Cuk converters
