Advancing power supply solutions through the promise of GaN Focus: This 5-page white paper offers an excellent introduction to gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors for managers, new engineers and others (like investors) who may have a technical background in electronics but are not well versed in power supply technology. It explains the value of GaN power transistors, how they differ from conventional silicon transistors, where and how they are used, the benefits they provide in power supply designs, the challenges of designing with them and some of the obstacles in the way of their adoption as well as ways these obstacles will be overcome. Naturally, it discusses how TI is positioning itself to support the expected growth of GaN power technology. It includes a concise but clear explanation of what switched-mode power supplies do and how they work (“GaN’s place in the power supply chain,†pages 2 and 3.) This is one of the best simple explanations of power supply operation I have read.
What you’ll learn: - How to understand the projected value of GaN power transistors in power supply applications
- How to understand the role of GaN power transistors in power supply applications
- How to understand what power supplies do and how they work
