Free Tool Takes The Drudgery Out Of Designing EMI Filters Focus: This article explains how engineers can use PowerEsim’s free online EMI simulation tool to predict the EMI in their power supply designs, specifically the input line ripple or differential-mode EMI, and to optimize their input EMI filters for maximum attenuation. After a brief introduction to the PowerEsim toolset and the EMI tool, the article reviews important considerations for designing four-stage differential-mode input EMI filters, especially the impact of parasitic capacitances and inductances on filter response. The article discusses the LC filter’s tendencies to create resonances that amplify rather than attenuate noise. The article offers tips for mimimizing the effects of the parasitics and for reducing the resonances that lead to unacceptable noise peaks.
