Medical AC-DC Power Supplies Are Becoming More Specialized

Focus:

Many procedures and treatments that until now were provided in controlled environments with professional medical supervision, like hospitals and physicians’ offices, are increasingly moving into the home and other non-classical sites. The IEC/EC/UL 60601-1-2 medical equipment standard is being upgraded to reflect these changes in the way that health care is delivered and these changes will impact medical power supply designs. The new 4th edition of IEC/EC/UL 60601-1-2 expands and delineates the power supply requirements into three distinct categories for Professional, Home Healthcare and Emergency Medical environments based on the amount of potential EMI and training of the device operator. This article explains the new categories and the more stringent ESD and EMI requirements, discusses the timetable for implementation of the 4th edition in different regions, describes some of the resulting changes in power supply design (which will make medical power supplies more distinct), and offers some examples of compliant adapters. A very useful table contrasts 3rd and 4th edition requirements.
