Sizing Your Power Converter's Magnetics (Part 2): Inductor Power Rating With An Input Voltage Range

Focus:

In part 1 of this article, the author explained how the power rating of a given inductor or transformer could be determined based on which one of the three PWM switch configurations it was being used with. Furthermore, he derived the formulas for determining the required power rating for an inductor in each switch configuration when the power circuit operates from a fixed input voltage. Here in part 2, the author performed a similar analysis and derived the formulas for determining inductor power ratings when the power converter operates from an input voltage range rather than a fixed voltage.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to calculate the required power rating and therefore size of a power inductor for a given PWM switch configuration given an input voltage range rather than a fixed input voltage
