Smart High-Side Switches Ease Safety Compliance For Industrial IoT

Focus:

IEC 62061 is the international norm that identifies the safety rules for industrial machinery. This standard defines the safety integrity level (SIL) concept as the safety requirements for a machine’s safety control system, and the established time interval and conditions in which the assigned safety functions must be performed. To design a system to the required SIL level, designers must use components that allow the whole system to achieve functional safety. With their embedded protection and diagnostic features, the IPS160H and IPS161H single-switch high-side drivers enable machine designers to realize functional safety more easily. This article describes and demonstrates these chip features including current limiting, thermal shutdown, non- dissipative short-circuit protection (cut-off), ground disconnection, VCC disconnection and undervoltage lockout, open-load detection and other diagnostics. This article also demos a fast demagnetization circuit that allows the switches to safely drive large inductive loads.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to ease compliance with IEC 62061 safety of machinery standard
  • How to safely drive large inductive loads in industrial applications
