Transformer Design (Part 1): Maximizing Core Utilization Focus: A previous article explained how to determine the optimal number of turns and other conditions
for maximizing use of the core in the magnetic part of coupled-inductor designs. This article
extends the discussion to transformer designs. First, the earlier work on coupled inductors is
reviewed, then key differences between coupled inductor and transformer design are identified
and different criteria are derived for making the same maximum use of a transformer core.
Ultimately, the limiting factors are core saturation and overheating, and operating frequency
plays a role in determining which of these factors determines maximum core utilization.
