Power Stage Strategies For Motor Control In Home Appliance Design Focus: In the design of the motor drive systems for appliances, the prevailing trend in power
electronics has been in the integration of discrete components to create intelligent
power module (IPM) devices. IPMs contribute to reliability and size reduction, while
newer IPMs offer the designer needed flexibility and lessen their impact on system
cost. This article discusses the different power stage options (discrete, hybrid, IPM
and smart IPM), and uses designs for in-room air conditioners and refrigerators to
illustrate the associated electrical, thermal, size and cost tradeoffs of the power
stage options.
What you’ll learn: - How to understand the different component integration options available for inverter
power stages used in appliance motor drives
- How to understand the different levels of integration available from intelligient MOSFET
or IGBT power modules
