How to Design a Flyback Converter in Seven Steps

Focus:

This article doesn’t explain much about how a flyback converter works beyond the briefest description of how the MOSFET and coupled inductor act, and there are no waveforms here. However, this short article walks you through the calculations for designing a simple, low power dc-dc flyback converter in seven steps (as advertised). It’s a quick cook book approach with just the final equations and tips for applying them. Not a primer on how flybacks work, but still a nice introduction to the design steps and the key equations. The design example worked through is based on the authors’ MP6004 primary side, DCM flyback converter.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to calculate the component values needed in a simple dc-dc flyback converter
