Can Foil Folding Improve Winding Performance In Transformers?

Focus:

Foil as a conductor shape can have advantages over wire. This short article explores various methods for winding with it by folding strips of foil. The goal in doing so is to further minimize eddy current effects in transformers employing foil windings. The author describes a few foil- folding techniques (including some geometric details) and shows physical examples.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to understand possible ways to achieve twisting of foil windings in transformers
  • How to understand possible ways to reduce eddy current effects in transformers with foil windings
