Designing An Open-Source Power Inverter (Part 25): Boost Or Buck For Converters That Increase Voltage?

Focus:

In this last installment in the series, the author revisits the question of whether the boost topology was optimal for the power transfer circuit in the Volksinverter’s battery converter in view of the popularity of the buck topology in commercial offerings of inverters for the residential market. In this analysis, he refines his comparison of the buck and boost topologies with a more direct comparison of the topologies. And in his analysis, he works through the design equations that influence the design of the transformer in each circuit, compares the current form factors of the transformer and power switches, and considers differences in waveforms, and design power ratios.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to evaluate the performance of buck and boost topologies in a kilowatt-level dc-ac inverter design
