High-Current Film Caps Filter DC Up To 1400 Vdc

Cornell Dubilier’s type 944U high-current film capacitors perform dc filtering for applications up to 1400 Vdc.  These “hockey puck” style capacitors are packaged in UL94V0 flame-retardant plastic cases that measure 84.5 mm in diameter with mounting flanges at the base (Fig. 1). Case heights of 40 mm, 51 mm and 64 mm are available with M8 threaded stud terminals or M5 threaded inserts.

High-current ratings and robust mounting flanges make these devices suited for inverter applications in electric vehicles as well as solar power inverters, wind power inverters and motor drives. Type 944U capacitors are available in voltage ratings of 800 Vdc to 1400 Vdc, capacitances from 33 µF to 220 µF, and rms current ratings up to 75 A at 55°C (Table and Fig 2). Capacitors are priced from $25.

Fig 1. “The large diameter, low profile and low inductance winding gives this package very high-current capability,”
says Ken Thompson, product manager at Cornell Dubilier.

Fig 2. Type 944U capacitors achieve high ripple-current ratings as illustrated by curves for the 52-uF, 1400-V capacitor and 160-uF, 800-V capacitor. According to the company, the short form factor of these components results in low ESR,
enabling these devices to handle more ripple current than capacitors of similar volume.
